"Mostly Maine," a solo exhibit of paintings by Sarasota artist and art educator Jamie Friedli, opens January 28 and runs through February 25 at Art Uptown, 1367 Main St., Sarasota.  An artist's reception is scheduled for Friday, February 3, 6 - 9 p.m. at the gallery.

Jamie studied under such renowned artists as Wolf Kahn in Sebasco, Maine and Joseph Perrin in Atlanta.  A professional artist since 1964, she attended Harris Institute of Art in Nashville and the Atlanta College of Art.

"I like to explore motion in my work and use bright colors because, for me, painting is a celebration of life," relayed the artist, who works in acrylics, oils, and mixed media.  "I am fascinated by the many layers of color, shape, texture and motion that I find in nature.  I use those elements to create images that reflect my personal experience, emotion and vision," she said.

Jamie has been teaching various art forms to other artists and students since 1970.  In addition to exhibiting regularly at Art Uptown, she also shows her paintings in her studio space above Art Uptown at 1369 Main St.  She has held leadership positions in the local and national art community and presently is president of Women Contemporary Artists.  She has won numerous awards for her paintings, which are found in corporate and private collections in Georgia, Florida, New York, Hawaii, Maine, Switzerland and Venezuela.

 Charlotte's Parlor by Jacquie Clark

Art Uptown, Sarasota's oldest cooperative fine art gallery, hosts Jacqueline Clark, a nationally recognized watercolorist, in a discussion and demonstration of her work entitled "Whimsical & Wacky Jacquie on Watercolor" on Friday, Feb. 17, 7-8:30 p.m. The gallery is at 1367 Main St., Sarasota. The public is invited to the program. There is no charge.

In the program, Jacquie will demonstrate how she creates her paintings using her non-dominant hand. She enjoys the "joyful spontaneity" of watercolor and has focused her efforts in that medium after a thorough grounding in sculpture and years of concentration on oil painting.

She is a graduate of the college of Dayton Art Institute, which she attended on scholarship. She started using watercolor for the ease. "No mess, no smell - just add water," she said, "I find that watercolor can be the most relaxing, fun and spiritually satisfying of all mediums."

Jacquie is a signature member of the National, Pennsylvania, Florida and the Florida Suncoast Watercolor Societies, and she has taught watercolor for many years at Manatee & Sarasota Adult Education and the local art associations. She shows her work regularly at Art Uptown Gallery.
